Employment and Training Opportunities
The Practice has trained GP Registrars since 1978 and has been accredited with the RACGP and later
Coast City Country Training (CCCT) Ltd since 1991. Dr Brian Tugwell is the Principal supervising
registrars while Dr Robert Wiles supervises medical students although all staff in the practice assist
with training in some capacity. Dr Wiles is a Senior Lecturer in the ANU Rural Clinical School and
Academic Co-ordinator for Cooma. The practice is accredited to teach Basic and Advanced registrars from
the RACGP and ACRRM.
The practice provides a wide range of training opportunities for rural general practice through the
varied skills and experiences of the doctors and staff. Sharp Street Surgery has 8 consulting rooms,
4 nurse treatment areas and a minor ops room. The GP registrar usually has their own room. The practice
is fully computerised with internet access from all workstations. Five doctors have appointments as
Visiting Medical Officers (VMO's) at the Cooma Hospital and cover many disciplines including Emergency
Medicine, in-patient care, anaesthetics, obstetrics & gynaecology. Cooma Hospital also offers a full
range of Community Health services while a number of the doctors visit the aged care facilities and
the gaol. There are also many visiting specialists to the town.
Terms are flexible with a 1 in 5 on call roster and the practice provides accommodation for registrars
working at the practice. With 10 doctors in the practice there is always good supervision. There is a
very good working relationship between the two training practices in Cooma which makes Cooma a very
pleasant place to live and work.
Working in Cooma creates many opportunities to not only learn rural general practice at its best but
to experience the support of an enthusiastic local community and enjoy our pristine mountain environment
as well. Whether skiing in winter or walking the Main Range in summer, experiencing our many cafes or
attending the Little Theatre, you will remember this time as one of the best times of your life.
All expressions of interest in employment should be forwarded to Jenny Dorahy, the
Practice Manager - to contact her, please use the information on contact page to email or ring.
