Our Surgery
The Sharp St Surgery is a rural General Practice based in the heart of Cooma NSW. The practice offers a large range of
medical services to the general public of the Snowy Mountains, and has around 11 doctors on the roll at any
particular time, making the surgery a busy and productive place. We share a cooperative on-call roster with
another practice in town allowing a comfortable after hours roster of about 1 in 5.
The practice is run by a small group of dedicated staff whom are all very proud of their workplace, and of the
high level of service that is offered to the town and region surrounding. Utmost care is taken to ensure that
all our staff, including doctors, nurses and administration personnel all participate in on-going professional development,
and are kept up to date with the best practice methods avaliable to a rural surgery.
We are accredited by Coast City Country Training Ltd to teach General Practice Registrars and have provided
training for registrars for more than 30 years. The practice has taught medical students from the University of
Sydney from 1994 to 2005 and the ANU Rural Stream since 2006.
We also have a teaching practice agreement with the Australian National University, and have
provided training for Rural Stream Registrars for more than 15 years. The staff regard teaching and training
as a vital part of their work, to sustain excellence and broad general skills, including procedural skills to
the next generation of Australia's rural doctors.
The Surgery sees visiting specialists from Canberra including two cardiologists and an endocrinologist
while the town has a visiting urologist,
Gynaecologist, General and Orthopaedic Surgery, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Geriatrics and others.
This variety allows for excellent ongoing training and variety of patient care. We have a full range of
Community based care programmes, and the local hospital is used as the Centre for Rehab Geriatric Care, among
other things.
The Sharp St Surgery building is located at 184 Sharp St, around 300 metres from the central park that is the
centre of the CBD of Cooma. The building has been nominated for heritage listing site and in its conversion to a surgery
has retained the 'heritage' look, style and atmosphere.
