"The year I spent at Sharp Street Surgery was the best way I could imagine starting off as a GP. I don't believe there'd be many better places to get such a rounded experience and exposure to the variety and breadth of rural general practice. Being surrounded by a team of GPs with incredibly diverse interests who were always happy to help with anything, from answering silly pesky questions to imparting a wealth of practical skills, was of immense value every day.
Cooma was a great area to work (and not just for it's proximity to the ski fields and some of Australia's best hiking). Personally, it was a big plunge in the deep end to be managing a steady load of emergency patients and gaining experience in critical care through VMO work at the hospital, but feeling I could call on anyone for support at any time was a great confidence builder and has left me with skills I never knew I'd have.
Daily surgery work would bring in people from all walks of life and a myriad of clinical presentations that has left me wondering where general practice ever got the reputation of being boring from! Behind the scenes of all of this was my marvellous supervisor Brian who was always so flexible in trying to make sure that my working and educational needs were met. He spent incredibly generous amounts of his time supporting me in learning the nitty gritty of general practice and taking time to sit in with me and give very useful feedback on my consultations.
None of this works though without a superb team of nursing and administration staff holding everything together, and you don't get any better or friendlier than Sharp Street. Sharp Street gave me a fantastic year that I'll always be very grateful for and will highly recommend it to any registrar looking for an incredible year."
From Dr Chee Koh"Sharp St Surgery is the sort of practice that offers more than just good clinical experience and training. Beyond the pre-requisite every registrar seeks, of approachable supervisors, regular face to face teaching and contact hours, broad clinical experience, this surgery sets itself apart by providing sound exposure to the often overlooked aspects of training of good practise management processes including: familiarity with patient safety and recall mechanisms, business aspects of General Practice, quality control processes, etc.
Holistic training, coupled with consulting rooms in a charming building that dates back to the 1900s (some of the consulting rooms have fireplaces with fires that burn all winter long), plus proximity to the ski-fields, and a renumeration package that way exceeds what practices in Sydney offer to registrars, make Sharp St Surgery a training option that is worth serious consideration."
